Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development The ordinary meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention held in Istanbul in early December 2013 launched the revision of the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD) adopted in 2005. The Mediterranean countries wish to adopt by 2015 a « MSSD 2.0 » articulated with the sustainable development goals being developed at the global level. The revision of the MSSD is an opportunity to engage more widely around the implementation of the Barcelona Convention and the achievement of good environmental status of marine and coastal ecosystems. The review process of the MSSD was officially announced on 14 February 2014 by the Maltese Minister for Sustainable Development, Environment and Climate Change, the Hon Mr Leo Brincat, during a ceremony held in Malta. Press release (in English/French/Arabic) The technical work supporting the revision of the MSSD is being carried out by the UNEP/MAP through its Plan Bleu Regional Activity Centre, with the help of the other regional activity centres. A consultation document outlining key questions for the revision of the MSSD is available, involving a wide circle of stakeholders to provide feedback. 15th meeting of the MCSD Steering Committee The Steering Committee of the Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development (MCSD) held its 15th meeting on 11 and 12 June 2014 in Malta and discussed the progress in activities related to sustainable development in the Mediterranean region. The Steering Committee approved the vision and structure that will guide the formulation of the revised MSSD over the next year. |
